“2012 has also blessed us with an unusually large number of notable films in its first six months. It’s a development we whole-heartedly support.”

Taika Waititi and James Rolleston on The Sound of Young America (by Jesse Thorn) Rolleston plays “Boy,” a young Maori boy who lives with his grandmother. When she heads off to a funeral in the city, he’s put in charge of the house, and is shocked when his father, played by Waititi, comes home from jail. Boy and his father struggle to connect, as the father struggles with the responsibilities of adulthood. Rolleston and Waititi both offer vibrant and hilarious performances.

Coming-of-age movies frequently deliver something real and recognizable, even if it’s not enough to go beyond sketch material and support a feature-length film.
“Boy,” from New Zealand, has its charms, most of them to do with Boy, an 11-year-old pop-culture enthusiast who’s obsessed with Michael Jackson and moonwalking.
